The senior director of public affairs is a key member of UNLV's central communications leadership team, advancing the university's image and reputation through executive and strategic communications.

The senior director develops strategies and processes to advance relationships between the university and its stakeholders. This includes creating internal/external communications on behalf of senior university administrators, partnering with division and other university leadership and departments on issues management, and responding to media inquiries related to high-level issues and initiatives. The position also manages the institution's public records and commercial filming processes, directs the crisis communications function, and serves as the university's primary public information officer.

Primary responsibilities include:

* Contributing to the oversight and development of executive communication for the president's office and university leadership* Leading university crisis communications planning and response, and supporting/executing strategies related to issues and reputation management* Serving as primary public information officer, responding to media inquiries related to institutional issues/initiatives* Managing overall process for public records and commercial filming on campus, including fees processing* Conceptualizing/creating messaging to support strategic university initiatives in alignment with institutional priorities

The senior director also provides additional communications support for the university administration and develops partnerships with campus, educational, and community liaisons to enhance the university's overall communication efforts.


This position requires a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and 10-plus years of related experience, including at least 1-3 years of management experience, 3-5 years of supervisory experience, and required experience in communications, journalism, or related field.

The preferred qualifications for this position are a bachelor's and master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and 10-plus years of related experience, including at least 3-5 years of management experience, 5-7 years of supervisory experience, and preferred experience in higher education communications setting; experience in management of public records or related functions.

Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.


Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
