Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

    This is an Open Continuous Announcement that will be used to fill multiple-specialty vacant throughout the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System and will remain open until 09/29/2023. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered and referred as vacancies become available.
    EDRP is applicable to the following assignment within the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System ONLY: RN Intensive Care Unit (ICU), RN Step Down ICU, RN Operating Room, RN Inpatient CLC. All other Registered Nurse assignments are NOT eligible for EDRP.
    Registered Nurses will be assigned to interested units throughout facility. The Registered Nurse practices in a complex patient care setting in collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues and the department nurse/unit manager.
    There are vacancies for Registered Nurses in a variety of specialty areas and locations to include:
    • Outpatient Services (Primary Care, Specialty Care, Surgical Clinic, Occupational Health, Spinal Cord Injury, Women Health Clinic, and Oncology)
    • Critical Care (Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Step Down ICU, Emergency Department)
    • Interventional Services (Dialysis, Infusion Clinic, Operating Room/PACU, Special Procedure Unit (SPU), Cath Lab/IR)
    • In-Patient (Medical/Surgical, Medical/Telemetry)
    • Mental Health (Acute Mental Health Inpatient, Detox/Substance Abuse) The primary responsibilities of this Registered Nurse may vary by assignment. Those duties may include but are not limited to:
      • Provide population specific and age-specific care for patients from young adulthood to older veterans/groups in the senior years of life.
      • Manage a defined but dynamic caseload of patients in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
      • Initiate, plan, implement, evaluate, and appropriately document patient care based on identified measurable outcomes in the applicable assigned patient care environment.
      • Anticipate and respond appropriately to emergencies, coordinate interventions, and evaluate responses through critical analysis of patient systems/operational situations.
      • Initiate and lead individuals or groups through the educational process to optimize health. Monitor and document all applicable clinical reminders and performance measure outcomes timely and appropriately.
      • Use Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) documentation in compliance with designated facility programs.
      • Implement the National Patient Safety Goals to support positive outcomes for the patient group.
      • May provide direct supervision and be assigned as a preceptor to new or less experienced staff or nursing students Work Schedule: A variety of work schedules are available (May be expected to work rotating weekends and holidays)
        Pay Schedule: The salary range listed in this announcement is a Base-Line Salary for a full-time work schedule. Starting salary will be set based on locality (which may include a special pay rate depending upon location), as well as Full Time, Part Time or Intermittent employment.

          Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
          Basic Requirements:
          • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
          • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
          • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
          • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
            • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
            • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
            • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
            • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
            • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
              Physical Requirements: Involves considerable amount of standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning. Requires carrying or lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs., but occasionally may require work that involves pushing or lifting in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or defend against emotionally ill clients. Requires use of hands for actions such as typing, simple grasping, fine manipulation, and repetitive actions. Requires the ability to frequently respond to multiple demands and priorities. Has potential for exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous waste and chemicals. Emotional and mental stability - ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the position and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
