The Role:We are looking for a Accounting Technician to support our Finance Department in logical interpretations of codes and regulations that must be made quickly, exercise sound judgment required to act in best interest of jurisdiction and organizing and prioritizing tasks.Performs responsible accounting and bookkeeping duties in the Finance Department requiring the regular use of independent judgment and, initiative. Uses a personal computer to input, format and maintain complex computerized data. Usually responsible for a full range of duties within a Finance Department or specialized area of payroll, payables, receivables, and accounting to assists in all areas.About North Las Vegas:Established in 1946, the City of North Las Vegas is the third largest city in Nevada and is one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Complimentary access to our fully equipped fitness center at City Hall.Key Focus of the Role:(Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following) Performs technical accounting activities involving the reconciling and auditing of assigned accounts; maintains a variety of accounts and general ledgers; prepares monthly fiscal reports and special reports relating to the progress of assigned accounts. Analyzes revenues and expenditures; recommends amendments to the budget as appropriate. Compiles and prepares appropriate data for accounts receivable billing to outside agencies; ensures accuracy of data for billing purposes. Maintains and reconciles a variety of ledgers, reports and account records; examines and corrects accounting transactions to ensure accuracy. Monitors and balances various accounts verifying availability of funds and classification of expenditures; researches and analyzes transactions to resolve problems. Collects delinquent payments from appropriate sources, as defined by policy or operating procedures. Prepares statistical and financial reports; enters updated information into the data base and maintains accurate financial records; prepares financial reports from data files. Receives and enters monthly journal entries from various departments; sets up new accounts on computer data base; explains program or policy changes to affected users. Assists with the development of mainframe and computer generated reports and information; tests the accuracy of the information generated; troubleshoots program problems. Reviews accounting and financial documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculation and makes correcting entries; examines supporting documentation to establish proper authorization and conformance with contracts and other agreements, policies and appropriate regulations. Prepares and maintains control and subsidiary accounting records; prepares trial balances and financial reports. Complies and prepares journal entries and periodic reconciliations of general ledger, journal, and subsidiary accounts; makes correcting entries as required; compiles and prepares financial reports and supporting schedules and documentation. Performs special assignments as requested, to include researching and preparing reports and projects; presenting technical data to management and others. Communicates with others outside own work area to coordinate efforts and maintain cooperative and efficient relations. Uses a personal computer to input, format and maintain complex computerized data. Assists in training new and temporary employees. Processes biweekly payroll, test data for accuracy and timeliness through Oracle applications. Processes payroll deduction changes. Tests payroll data for final production. Processes data changes for benefit program that integrate with payroll processing. Provides payroll reporting as requested. Complies and processes payroll data for biweekly payroll, pension, insurance, bank, credit union, etc. Performs responsible payroll accounting and bookkeeping duties including the use of Oracle software and exercises a moderate amount of independence. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications and Attributes: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, finance, public administration, accounting or a related field; AND, Two (2) years of progressively complex and responsible accounting work experience to include financial and statistical record keeping in payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, financial reporting, bank reconciliations and general ledger using complex Excel spreadsheets. Experience with governmental accounting systems in a public agency setting is desirable.Equivalency: Four( 4) years of progressively responsible accounting work experience to include financial and statistical record keeping in payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, financial reporting, bank reconciliations and general ledger using complex Excel spreadsheets may be substituted for the required education and the experience listed above. Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver's license within required time frame.
