The men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country
deserve the utmost respect. As a Mortuary Affairs Specialist in the
Army National Guard, you will give fallen Soldiers the dignity,
care, and respect they merit.
The Mortuary Affairs Specialist performs duties relating to the
search, recovery, processing, and evacuation of the remains of
deceased U.S. Armed Forces personnel. Mortuary Affairs Specialists
also inventory, safeguard, and ensure the recovery and safe return
of personal effects. They coordinate with non-U.S. authorities
concerning disposition of enemy, allied, or civilian remains, and
may serve as team members and recovery specialists at the Army's
Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii.
Job Duties
• Search areas for unburied dead, unmarked graves, personal effects
and identification media
• Disinter remains, record personal effects and evacuate remains
and personal effects to designated points
• Determine and record recovery locations on maps, sketches and
overlays
• Establish and record tentative identification
• Inventory, safeguard, and evacuate personal effects
• Assist in preparation, preservation, and shipment of remains
Through your training, you will develop the skills and experience
to enjoy a civilian career in funeral services or forensic
medicine.

earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition
assistance.
Job training for Mortuary Affairs Specialists consists of 10 weeks
of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and
seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Training consists of
both classroom and field work.
