JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of complex police dispatching duties; dispatches and tracks officer activity in order to secure the safety of the officer; receives and screens emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls for service for law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services for the area served by the North Las Vegas Police Department; evaluates the weight and seriousness of the calls, prioritizes the calls, and dispatches appropriate personnel to respond.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following) Receives emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency police calls from the public and other agencies requesting law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services; handles calls in accordance with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures established by the City and the Department. Obtains information from callers to determine the nature, location, and priority of calls; enters calls into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System (CADS); recalls citizens as necessary. Maintains contact with callers to obtain up-to-date information on incidents and provide information and instructions to callers prior to the arrival of police, fire, or emergency services; relays and provides updates, such as crimes in progress, medical conditions of persons, unusual situations and other information that could affect dispatch or police operations. Requests services from other agencies including the language line, tow companies, coroner's office, and other agencies as required. Receives calls for telephonic search warrants and provides pertinent information to appropriate personnel. Receives calls on incidents pertaining to problems with traffic signals, street lights, water, sewer, animal control and other City operations and notifies the appropriate personnel. Receives teletypes from out of state agencies pertaining to missing persons, determines travel routes of missing persons, and provides information to appropriate persons. Documents all calls for service by entering information into the CADS. Assists Departmental personnel and the public by providing general information such as telephone numbers, building and street locations, travel distances, and community services. Takes and transmits messages for Departmental personnel. Utilizes the Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD) or the Teletypewriter (TTY) to obtain information from and convey information to callers with special needs. Prioritizes and dispatches emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls for service. Documents all calls initiated by patrol officers by entering information into CADS. Contacts appropriate field unit by two-way radio, relays information about the nature and location of the incident, and dispatches unit to location. Performs dispatch services for other units including animal control, detectives, crime scene investigators, SWAT, K9, community service officers, and other City agencies; provides assistance with street directions as requested. Performs research for field officers as requested; including warrants, missing persons, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. Notifies on-call personnel and provides details of calls as required. Queries NCIC, NCJIS, SCOPE, WVS, DMV, and other local, State and national computer files to determine status of vehicles, persons, and property and determine existence of wants and warrants; accesses computer systems to provide information to and request information from other agencies. Enters information in NCIC, NCJIS, SCOPE, WVS, and other local, State and national computer files; confirms validity and status of information for other agencies. Monitors equipment for proper functioning and possible problems; notifies management and appropriate service and maintenance personnel of equipment malfunctions. Obtains information pertinent to efficient operation from previous shifts, and briefs oncoming shift and supervisory personnel. Answers alarms that occur at City Hall, Justice Facility, elevators and other City buildings by determining the location and authenticity of the alarm and notifying the on-duty supervisor when necessary. Contacts outside agencies to confirm warrants, status of stolen property or other requested information as needed to provide to appropriate persons. Updates computerized and manual files, logs, and records. Provides training to new employees as needed in relation to call-taking and dispatching methods and techniques; City and Department policies and procedures; equipment operation and use; monitors performance and provides instruction; prepares training evaluations; and assigns weekly goals. Completes manual mode cards for service when CADS fails. Works as part of a team to ensure public safety by handling the work of the Communications Division efficiently and timely. Reads, updates, and remains current on pertinent Division, Department, City, and labor agreement policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintains confidentiality; demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and empathy. Performs other duties as required. Exemplifies the Department and City values, both on and off duty. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Upload recent typing certificate with your application (REQUIRED); certification which verifies typing 45 accurate net words per minute for five minutes with a maximum of ten (10) errors and dated no earlier than January 01, 2020How to Apply: Upload any other supporting documentation that shows how minimum qualifications are met. Once the application and typing certificate has been reviewed and it has been determined that the minimum qualifications have been met, an invitation to take a Computerized Examination through the National Testing Network (NTN) may be sent upon confirmation of eligibility. This exam is required and must be completed by Dec 15th, 2020, in order to be considered for an interview. Rules and timelines established by NTN will be followed. Qualifications will be determined by the Department. The required test modules include: Call-Taker Dispatch Note-Taking Computer Skills Integrity Those meeting minimum qualifications and successfully passing the NTN test may be called for an interview. The interview will be Pass/Fail and will be scheduled by appointment only. During the interview, a practical exam may be administered. **Note - There is a fee to take the test and must be paid through NTN.** Upon selection, the next step is the Background Investigation Process - Includes an intensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam, and a psychological evaluation. Candidates must achieve the required minimum score set by the Department. All Persons who meet the minimum requirements and wish to apply for this position are personally responsible for submitting a completed online application, submitting a qualifying typing certificate, and for obtaining acceptable scores on the NTN Test.
